Description
This is an unusual example of a Kate Greenaway-decorated scent or perfume bottle. The screw top lid is clearly hallmarked for London 1887 with the maker's mark of Sampson Mordan. The red cylindrical glass body is in excellent condition although the glass stopper is stuck. There are initials on the top of the lid. Kate Greenaway was a well loved and prolific English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations and most notably her very popular depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in the Queen Anne style. Born in Hoxton in 1846, she was the daughter of a draughtsman and engraver, John Greenaway. She popularised a style of drawing that is instantly recognisable as hers – delicate watercolours of children with animals and birds in the English countryside. From1882, Kate Greenaway pictures appeared on Sampson Mordan silver scent bottles almost always with children in the foreground and a house or church in the background.
