Description

A sophisticated pair of occasional chairs combining classical and Aesthetic Movement elements. The cut-velvet seat covers are probably original, although uniformly faded.
The chairs would have been described at the time as 'fancy chairs' intended as decorative objects for occasional use. As a consequence these chairs are not robust and several of the stretchers have been re-glued where they join the legs. Both chairs have a few isolated spots of historic worm.
*The firm of J.S Henry flourished in London from the late 1870's, moving to a five storey premises in Old Street by 1891. Henry is recorded as designing artistic furniture, however J. Montague Ellwood probably conceived much of the firms output. In the late 1890's C.F.A Voysey provided designs for the firm as did E.G Punnett.
Interestingly, while exclusively a wholesale business in London, the firm also had a showroom and workshop in Glasgow.
*Specific details from BIFMO, The Furniture History Society online.
