Description
Unique Victorian carved ebony and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane. The silver was assayed in London as shown in the pictures, date letter for 1900 and makers Jonathan Howell & Co Ltd. It's a single piece of ebony with a turned pommel and a beautifully carved shaft. A solid silver collar formed to look like a buckle that's engraved "S Slocock Woking". The shaft is fully carved with foliage and flowers that wind around the cane between the silver collar and the top of the ferrule. The engraving ties in with the Slocock family who owned the Victorian Garden Nurseries in Woking and one of the decided to have a customised cane that reflected their love of plants. I've never seen one like it, the carving must have taken hours of work, the detail is stunning and shows much better in natural light than in the pictures. It measures 90.5 cm 35 3/8 inches in length, the pommel is 2.7 cm 1 1/8 inches wide. The ferrule is original and made of brass and steel. It's in excellent condition no damage or repairs. Gain movement in the ebony in one place on the pommel and at the top of the cane caused by the carving. hasn't weakened either and is age related not damage. Stunning unique piece to add to any collection. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
