A lovely Arts and Crafts sterling silver & wood mazer bowl with excellent Celtic casting and engraving on an otherwise plain round bowl mounted on a cylindrical oak base. A mazer is a bowl without handles used for drinking in medieval times, from around 13th to 16th century and as early as 1280. The mazer was made by David and Maurice Davis of Birmingham, at Livery Street, in 1929. The Assay mark is for Sheffield. The influence of the work of Albert Edward Jones and the Birmingham wing of the Central School of Arts and Crafts is evident in the design and revival of this object. Diameter: 12 cm | Height: 6.7 cm | Weight: 210 g (including the wood base). Condition: The silver is in excellent condition. The hallmarks are crisp and clear. Wood in excellent antique condition, with no splits or repair.
