Description
This wonderful watercolour portrait has a real sense of intimacy to it and I imagine was painted by a highly skilled amateur of whom there were an awful lot around with the popularity of art lessons for those who could afford it, so maybe it was a friend or relative of the sitter. It is signed with the name Mary Kipling and dated 1847, I am unsure if the name refers to the artist or the sitter. The painting is executed with watercolour on paper the face is painted with far greater detail than the body and I think finely painted with the shadows of her face highlighting her wonderfully strong nose and her deep set eyes. The portraits sits within a simple deep wooden frame which I am certain is not the original one but I have to say its simplicity does work very well with the portrait. DATE - 1847 CONDITION - Both the portrait and the frame are are in good condition. There is the loss of paint to the young lady's eyes, it is very marginal in one eye and more obvious in the other. The paper has almost certainly darkened and yellowed with age as to be expected. There also what looks to be a little dirt under the glass in the bottom corner under the signature. The tape on the back of the frame is old and slightly dry and I would recommend testing or replacing the string before hanging. * POSTAGE - All items include the cost of packing and postage to the UK. I send my items both Tracked & Signed For with Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Service. I am happy to ship items to overseas buyers, please contact me prior to buying with address details and I will forward a quote deducting the cost of UK postage.
