Description
Antique Sitzendorf porcelain figural candlesticks - shepherdess and lute player This pair of antique Sitzendorf porcelain candlesticks, crafted in Germany at the end of the 19th century, features a charming pastoral theme. One candlestick depicts a young woman seated next to a goat, holding a basket of grapes, while the other features a young man playing a lute and seated on sheaves of wheat. The figures rest on ornate gilt Rococo-style bases, and the candleholders are shaped like pastel-coloured flowers, blending functionality with decorative artistry. These candlesticks are a beautiful example of Sitzendorf’s renowned craftsmanship and are highly sought after by collectors of fine European porcelain. Historical background: The Sitzendorf Porcelain Factory, founded in 1850 in Thuringia, Germany, was established during a period when the region became a hub for porcelain production due to its rich kaolin deposits. Sitzendorf is celebrated for its high-quality porcelain, particularly its hand-painted figurines and decorative pieces. The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a golden age for the factory, with figurines from this era, especially those made before 1932, being highly valued by collectors today. Dimensions: Height approximately 20 cm Total weight 894 grams Condition: Young woman: Minimal chips on a few leaves, visible only under a magnifying glass. Young man: Minor chips on the spike of wheat he is seated on. Otherwise, both pieces are in excellent antique condition.
