Research Notes - in the 19th century, it was quite common for Italian homes, especially upper-class or bourgeois households, to have wall panel paintings or fresco-style decorations inspired by ancient Roman art. The discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the 18th century sparked a huge revival of classical themes in European art and interior design, known as Neoclassicism. By the 19th century, wealthy Italians and Europeans often decorated their homes with paintings and panels that imitated ancient Roman frescoes, particularly scenes of mythological figures, Roman maidens, or floral motifs. These were seen as a way to showcase cultural refinement and appreciation for classical antiquity.
