Description

I think the first thing I ought to let you know is the height of each of these two figures which is approx 7&1/4" / 18.5cm, which is a pretty good height for displaying. I think originally from all the verdigris (the bright blue green patina) on them they were possibly figures from a water feature or fountain, and there is certainly age to them, my instinct is telling me they would date to the Georgian era, either the late 1700s or early 1800s. I think the fact that they have no heads is for me making their figures so incredibly and wonderfully expressive. Their bodies really are extremely beautiful and very finely cast, with divine detailing of their fingers and toes. I think they are made from brass, although verdigris is also found on copper and bronze. Each of the figures pose is identical, slightly leaning forward their hands clasped resting on their hips and each of them wears around their waist a ribbon tied in a bow at the back. On the back on each of their arms there are some remnants of solder where they have been ripped off the vessel they were originally holding up on those arms. At the feet of each of the figurine is a small piece of the vessel they were standing on and the screw attaching them, it makes me smile as it makes me think they are on tiny skate boards and as can be seen from the photos one of the figurines has the large internal screw coming through their neck.
*
AGE- Circa 1800
*
CONDITION - Well obviously headless and covered in verdigris. As mentioned remnants of solder can be seen on the back of their arms and on the figurine without the screw coming through the top some toes have been broken off which is best seen in the fifth photo. I guess these two would be described a 'salvage' as they have been salvaged from their original vessel and are therefore not perfect. I also want to point out that in my photos I have propped each of the figures up, neither of them stand on their own. I will leave it to their new owner to decide whether they create some sort of base for them or leave them to display upright or laid down.
