Description
The portrait is painted in watercolour on paper with I think pencil and is inscribed in the lower corner 'Drawn by A Burt, Reading 1837'. The lady of this portrait is dressed simply in Black seated with her black slippered feet resting on a small cushion on the floor, she looks directly at us and in her hand she holds an open book which most likely is the Bible. She wears no adornment of jewellery to the black dress just a simple shawl around her shoulders so I think this could indicate that she is likely to be in early mourning when no jewellery was worn. The portrait sits in a simple wooden frame which I believe has to be the original one because on the reverse is Albin Burt's Trade Label, stating 'Miniature Painting Taught and Striking Likenesses taken by Mr Burt', there is a lot more text which is hard to make out as the label understandably is worn but it does show his address being in Reading which is also where the portrait was painted. Although it seems Mr Albin Robert Burt was a very, very busy man, with apparently one trade label boasting he has painted over 4,000 miniatures there really isn't too much information I found out about him, apart from the fact he was born in 1783 and initially trained as an Engraver, marrying in 1810 and having with his wife Sarah eight children and dying 5 years after this portrait was painted in 1842. * DATE - 1837 * CONDITION - Both the portrait and the frame are in good condition although they show some signs of the many years they have lived, the paper of the portrait has darkened with age is maybe a little dirty, but there is no foxing that I can see. The frame is a little dry and would most likely appreciate a wax but I will leave it to its new owner to decide, but the glass is free from any scratches that I can see. As I have already mentioned the trade label is very worn and it is no longer easy to read all the type on it and a new hanger will need to be attached. * DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Framed - Height 15" / 38cm, Width 12&1/4" / 31cm, Depth 3/4" / 2cm. Image Size - Height 11"28cm, Width 8&1/4" / 21cm * POSTAGE - £12.00 UK I send my items both Tracked & Signed For with Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Service.
