Description
This small picture certainly has age to it and I suspect it would date to the mid 1800s, but it is neither signed nor dated, it sits in what I suspect could be its original painted wooden frame. The quality of the penmanship is wonderful, indeed I have looked on many occasion through a strong magnifier checking to see if I could see the tiny dots that meant it was a print but non were to be found. And as well as the skill of the penmanship especially when one looks at the faces of the rabbits there is also such skill in the use of shadows giving the picture a beautiful sense of depth and then we have those two large cooking vessels to the side surely they would have been painted with ink and how I love how the light falls on the larger of the pots, but I think my favourite is a little tiny pot on the other side just by the rabbit's head. The subject of a Game Larder was popular in England in the mid 1800s with Artists such as Benjamin Blake and William Shaw who were most likely inspired by the Dutch Painters of the seventeenth century. * AGE - Circa 1850 * CONDITION - Both the picture and the frame are in good condition. There some tiny losses to the paper on one side of the painting which I think can best be seen in the first photo and these look to be trapped inside the glass and again I think this is best seen in the same photo. The frame as I hope you can see has lost some of its edging on the bottom left hand corner as you look at it (possibly best seen in the first photo). At some point in its life the frame has been repainted also the backing paper has been opened and held back together with masking tape. * DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Framed - Height 8" / 20.5cm, Width 6&3/4" / 17cm, Depth 1&1/4" / 3cm.
