Description
This Decoy of a Wading Bird, possibly a Curlew is so beautiful in its simplicity and from the wonderful patina that the wood has garnered my instinct tells me it would likely date to circa 1930. Being a handmade piece there are of course no labels to identify the maker but that is its intrinsic beauty, it was made for a purpose, to attract birds to it when its owner was out hunting and no doubt used initially for that purpose but when its usefulness disappeared its beauty didn't, and now this dear Bird has been placed on a very simple wooden stand and is so wonderfully decorative. The wood used is both light in colour and in weight and it looks to me that the bird has been carved out of a single piece of wood with simple carved lines to define the feathers of his wings and tail, a shallow furrow has been carved on each side of his head at the centre of which each eye sits. The wonderful long beak which tips down at the very end has been painted black which has also been used to highlight the eyes, indeed when I first saw them I thought they were glass eyes and when I look at him quickly it still can look like that.as well as the wonderful patina there is also a partial veil of colour the green from paint that once covered his feathers and the gold paint of his underbelly. And finally those legs just two pieces of bent metal that sink into the wooden rectangular base but my goodness those legs bring such surprising life to the piece. * AGE - Circa 1930 * CONDITION - Well I think his condition is beautiful, the paint of his body has worn and there is some pitting to the black paint of his beak on one side, best seen in the second photo. His metal legs are matt with age and the base they sit in is somewhat rough. * DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Height 6&1/2" / 16.5cm, Width 8" / 20cm, Depth 1&3/4" / 4.5cm * POSTAGE - £12.00 UK I send my items both Tracked & Signed For with Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Service.
