Description

‘Chantrey’s Birthplace, Jordanthorpe’, an original linocut print by Harry Epworth Allen (1894 - 1958). Harry Epwoth Allen is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive interpreters of landscape. He was born in Sheffield and the city was his home throughout his life. This print is framed and mounted, and ready to hang.
Harry Epworth Allen usually produced works in paint, but also made a selection of linocut and woodblock prints. There is plenty of information to be read about him online, so I won’t repeat it all here, but many of his works are based on landscapes in Derbyshire (what is now the Peak District) near to his home in Sheffield. Having lived in the Peak District all my life I love his paintings of Derbyshire - he captures something of the landscape in a way that, for me, no one else has.
It is signed and titled on the front, and there is a label on the rear giving more information about the subject, which reads as follows: ‘Jordanthorpe Farm, Norton. Birthplace of Sir Francis Chantrey. Farmhouse (extant). Backyard entrance to two cottages, third at the front made into one farmhouse and occupied by the Shepherd family who farmed from 1934 - 1965, when the farm was disbanded and made into the Jordanthorpe and Batemoor estates.’ Sir Francis Chantrey was the leading portrait sculptor in Regency Britain, which is perhaps why Allen chose this building as a subject. He also painted the same view.
Condition: The print has various age spots and the paper is a little discoloured. The mount is similarly a little discoloured. We haven’t removed the print from the frame, but there is no damage to the paper visible.
Dimensions:
Including the frame - 36.8cm wide, 33.8cm tall.
Image size (the opening in the mount) - 20.8cm wide, 17cm tall.
