Description

Tinsel Prints of the 1800s seem to have been a very British Affair. They were prints often of famous Actors or Heroes of the day. They could be purchased for 1 penny plain or 2 pennies coloured and then they were taken home and they were embellished with beads, fabric, ribbons and even metal foils. They first became popular in England in the 1820s, then vanishing from fashion in the 1860s. This example portrays Fanny Kemble in her role of Belvidera from The English Restoration Play 'Venice Preserv'd' written by Thomas Otway, indeed we see Fanny portrayed in front of what I believe is an image of St Marks Square in Venice. And certainly Fanny has been magnificently 'tinselled' with beads defining her gorgeous drop earrings and that wonderful necklace, but the beads don't stop there they are glued around her hair and in the veil that falls from it, and over the fabric of her blouse and her skirt. Fanny has been well and truly embellished with maybe the most eye catching embellishment being that of her golden gloves which I think refer to the pair of Gloves believed to be owned by Shakespeare which were reportedly passed on to her from the famous English Actor and Playwright David Garrick which he had obtained from Shakespeare's descendants.
Fanny was an incredible woman, born in 1809 into an acting family, including being the niece of Sarah Siddons her first role was as Juliet in 1829. In 1832 she toured America with her father and there met her husband Pierce Mease Butler whom she married in 1834. Pierce had inherited 3 plantations on Butlers Island in the States and the 100s of people who were enslaved on them. He was resistant to take his British wife to visit them as he probably guessed Fanny would hold different opinions on slavery as it had been abolished in England in 1807, and he was correct. When he finally allowed Fanny and their children to visit she was shocked and horrified by the suffering and treatment of the slaves she saw, keeping a journal of her thoughts and experiences. Butler was not at all sympathetic to her thinking and forbade her to publish the journal. Unsurprisingly tension in their marriage escalated, not helped at all by his infidelities and in 1847 Butler filed for Divorce. In 1863 Fanny published her journal with the title 'Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839', returning to England and returning to Acting.
The tinsel print sits in a much later simple light yellow painted wooden frame which think is very sympathetic to the tinsel print.

AGE - Circa 1835
*
Both the Tinsel Print and the frame are in good condition but they are not perfect. The paper of the Print has clearly darkened with age and is quite dirty at the bottom across the blue floor and the title banner. There is some small specs of dirt trapped under the glass and the paper is a touch grubby in places which I think is to be expected considering it is nearly 200 years old. There is one small tear in the edge of the paper by her bent arm which can just be seen in the second photo. Also it does look like one of the fingers of the glove on the hand being held up could be missing. But wonderfully all the rest of the tinsel additions look to be still in place. The frame is a little dirty, I have not attempted to clean it as I did not want to damage the print.
