The execution is competent — possibly from a good-quality British provincial school Provenance - Label verso: “Purchased from the Collection of Sir H. B. Bacon. in 1947” Notes - Sir Hickman Bacon (1855–1945) – The Collector. One of the greatest private collectors of British Romantic landscape art. He built his collection between the 1890s and WWI and focused on masters like Turner, Girtin, Cozens, Cotman. The Bacon Collection is still held at Thonock Hall, Lincolnshire. Widely respected for the quality and importance of his holdings. Some of his collection was shown at the British Museum and Tate. A finely executed late 19th-century English School oil painting depicting travellers and a horse-drawn cart making their way through a tranquil woodland clearing. The scene is framed by tall trees with sunlit foliage and animated with a sense of rural peace, enhanced by the small group of figures and animals beside a quiet pool. A seated figure resting beneath a large tree adds a gentle narrative touch. Finished in a bold, deep-relief gilt swept frame.
