Description
A lovely Copeland armorial dessert plate with a striking vibrant royal blue border inside a gilded rim border reserving a geometric pattern of dots and dashes. The inner edge of the blue is edged with an elaborate gilt border and the centre is painted with a magnificent armorial. In an ornate scrolled, feather frame is a shield decorated to one side with a stag's head against a red ground surrounded by three crowns. The other has a white cross over a blue ground with two quadrants also with three crowns. The motto "Stand Fast" runs around the outer ring. An armoured helmet rests on top of the shield and is topped with a burning hill, or mountain, which coupled with the motto, is the crest of various families of the name Grant. Three crowns on a red ground is also the shield of a family Grant, but I haven't been able to determine the source of this variation. Copeland stamp to the reverse and pattern number D1640, c.1859-1860. Reference: Fairbank's book of family crests of Great Britain & Ireland. It measures 22.5cm (8 7/8") wide and 2cm (3/4") high. In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and very minor handling wear, just a couple of faint scratches to the blue ground.
