Description

Antique set of FIRST WORLD WAR PHOTOGRAPHS . . . . STEREOVIEWS OF THE GREAT WAR, PUBLISHED BY REALISTIC TRAVELS, [C.1918] . Title the Great War 'Official Series' vol 1 and vol 2 This set is not consecutive numbers as it starts at 1 and goes to 197 and seems to number 99 but may miscount .These stereoviews were published by Realistic Travels, a London-based company, and were distributed in sets . They are known for their evocative and poignant depictions of the war effort, showcasing scenes of troops, daily life, landscapes, and ruined buildings, primarily from France and Belgium.
Includes UK mainland delivery. Sorry no Ireland
Girdwood printed his stereoviews on at least four distinct mount stocks, although the paper was always of the highest quality. Using a high–silver emulsion, Realistic Travels stereoviews really ‘pop’ when placed next to the works of U&U and KVC. While there is an ‘Official Series’ of 600 cards, and many smaller series derived from it, it is important to note that there were almost certainly over 1,000 negatives published, that captions are inconsistent and because of the number of changes to the sets, the card numbers are virtually meaningless unless they have remained in order for roughly a century
card mounted stereoviews, housed in two purple/brown cloth covered book-style boxes, minor wear to cards, wear and fading to boxes which are scruffy but complete. . . these weigh in KIlo and although the box is scruffy the cards are brilliant unfaded etc
