Description
A rare and finely executed lidded ginger jar by Helena Wolfsohn, Dresden, circa 1880. Of classic baluster form with domed cover and gilt finial, the jar is hand-painted with two reserves of romantic Watteau-style scenes and two colourful floral panels on a rich blue ground. The neck, base and cover feature raised gilt scrollwork and detailed latticework, while the interior of the cover is also decorated. The base is marked underglaze blue “AR” (Augustus Rex), an imitation mark characteristic of Wolfsohn’s Dresden workshop in the late 19th century. Helena Wolfsohn is known for her atelier’s superb painting quality, combining motifs inspired by Meissen porcelain with Dresden decorative traditions, and for her prominent role as a female studio owner and patron of women artists. A very attractive and collectible example of 19th-century Dresden porcelain in the Meissen tradition. Condition: Excellent antique condition. Only minimal wear to enamel and gilt; no chips, cracks, or restorations. Dimensions: Height (with lid): 21 cm; diameter: 12 cm; weight: 525 g. Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.
