Type of artwork: Original Grisaille Watercolour – Romantic Landscape with Distant Mountains
Surface: Fine textured paper, mounted (unframed)
Artist and Signature: Unsigned, British School – circa 1820–1850
Executed with confidence and atmospheric skill in a warm sepia palette, reminiscent of early topographical studies from the Grand Tour period.
Romantic Landscape Study: A timeless and evocative early 19th-century watercolour study, likely produced by a trained academic or travelling artist. The scene depicts a mountainous landscape with rolling woodland and a broad river valley, drawn with expressive brushwork and tonal depth. These monochrome wash pieces were often made en plein air as part of an artist’s sketchbook, or in preparation for more finished works back in the studio.
