Description
This silhouette would I imagine date to the mid 1800s circa 1850 and is painted with watercolour on card. There is almost a naive quality to the painting helping to convey a sense of both vulnerability and earnestness to the subject. White paint is used to highlight the detail on the silhouette, instead of the more normal bronze, giving detail to her hair and dress, although my favourite detail is the hand that hangs down clasping in between her fingers the lace shawl she appears to wear around her waist. In the other hand where we have a clue to the narrative of the portrait as she appears to be holding a card which looks to have a 'heart' painted upon it. The frame she now sits in is not the original one as that and the mount were both badly damaged and very dirty. The new frame has wonderful Acanthus shaped scrolls around the edge and although of similar age to the silhouette I imagine it would date to the end of the 1800s * AGE - Circa 1850 * CONDTION - Both the silhouette and the frame are in good condition. The paper has aged and undoubtedly is not as bright as it once was and there is what almost looks like a very fine brush mark in a peach colour just to the side of the card she is holding which can best be seen in the third photo with a similar mark on the other side which can just be see in the second photo. The frame does have some very fine hairline cracks in it so it could be gesso but everything feels very sound and secure, and there appear to be no scratches that I can see in the glass. * DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Framed - Height 11&1/2" / 29cm, Width 24cm9&1/2", Depth 3/4" / 2cm * * POSTAGE - £12.00 UK I send my items both Tracked & Signed For with Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Service.
