Description

Victorian Military Despatch Box – Col. Chaloner, Chubb & Son
A late 19th-century military or diplomatic despatch box, made by Chubb & Son of London, with gilt lettering to the front reading:
COL. CHALONER, GISBORO HALL, GUISBOROUGH, YORKS.
Constructed of wood with leather or leathercloth covering, this sturdy lockable box was manufactured by Chubb & Son, 58 St James’s St. S.W., renowned makers of secure boxes for military and government use. The original patented Chubb lock is still in place, though the key is absent.
Internally lined in black, the box retains a good portion of its original character, though the surface shows wear and signs of age-related repairs, including some filler to the exterior and rubbing to corners and edges.
