Frederick William Booty was a prolific 19th-century British watercolourist known for his atmospheric scenes of coastal life, smoke rising from chimneyed rooftops, and detailed topographical views. Born in 1840, Booty worked mainly in Yorkshire and was particularly drawn to harbourside towns like Hull and Whitby. His work often features misty light, crumbling sea walls, and distant spires, capturing a romantic yet gritty view of northern life.
His paintings have been exhibited and sold widely in the UK, with auction records showing consistent interest over the past two decades. Booty’s muted tones and distinctive eye for urban maritime beauty place him among the notable Northern watercolourists of his era.
