Description
Type of artwork: Original Watercolour – Coastal Village, East Coast of Scotland Surface: Watercolour paper / Card Artist and Signature: Monogrammed J M....John Mitchell, dated 1877 (lower left) Artist Biography: John Mitchell (British, fl. mid-to-late 19th century) was a painter of coastal and rural Scottish subjects, often working in Deeside and the Aberdeenshire coastline. His works typically feature small fishing communities, harbours, and atmospheric seascapes painted en plein air, with a keen eye for architectural detail and shoreline life. Mitchell’s watercolours from the 1870s–1880s are held in private collections and appear occasionally at regional auctions, where their location-specific charm appeals to collectors of Scottish art. Provenance: Purchased in the past from Atholl Antiques, a respected Scottish dealer known for fine period furniture, paintings, and decorative art. Coastal Study: A charming late-Victorian watercolour of a small East Coast Scottish fishing village, dated 1877. Red pantile cottages line the bay, set behind grassy dunes, with a sweeping sandy shoreline and rocky skerries under an overcast sky. On the headland to the left sits a small lookout/signal frame — a familiar feature of northeast fishing settlements in the 19th century. Painted with a light, confident touch, the work captures the quiet atmosphere of the Scottish coast in this period. Approximate age of artwork: Victorian, dated 1877 Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Framed, as Shown. (Offred Free with the Painting) Condition Report: Very good ; in line with age — colours remain fresh, paper shows only light toning consistent with age, no tears or repairs seen.
