Antique Papier-Mâché Box with Chinoiserie Decoration
Late 19th to early 20th century
Dimensions: approx. 20 x 17 x 5 cm
A decorative black papier-mâché box, the lid adorned with a hand-painted chinoiserie design featuring a bird perched among stylised branches and berries in warm ochre and russet tones. The interior is plain, and the base is similarly blackened. The surface bears signs of wear consistent with age, including light scuffing and minor losses to the lacquer, particularly at the edges
Likely produced in Japan or China for export, or in the manner of such work, the box reflects the widespread 19th-century Western fascination with East Asian decorative arts. Suitable for light storage or display.
