Description

A good quality antique early to mid 19th century bronze and marble grand tour desk thermometer modelled as the Luxor Obelisk. The bronze obelisk decorated with hieroglyphic tributes to the pharaoh Ramses II, a thermometer to the front, mounted on a grey/green and black patterned marble base.
Made in France as a Grand tour souvenir marking the arrival in Paris of the Luxor Obelisk. The Obelisk (French, Obélisque de Louxor) is a 23 metre (75 ft) high Egyptian obelisk now standing at the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris, France. It was originally located at the entrance to Luxor Temple, in Egypt but it was moved to Paris in 1833.
Overall approximately 19cm high. Base 8.5cm x 8.5cm.
In overall good condition, two small holes to the marble base where something was perhaps attached however these do not detract. Some small chips/nibbles to the edges of the marble base. Some light surface wear and marks as expected with age however this does not detract. The thermometer appears to be working well. A nice patination to the surface of the bronze obelisk.
