Description
Pair of Antique African Carved Ironwood Lions c.1900 An expressive pair of African hand-carved lion figures, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, likely produced in West or Central Africa for the export or colonial market. Each lion is meticulously carved from dense tropical hardwood, likely ironwood, and stands poised on a naturalistic rocky base. The figures feature deeply carved manes, muscular bodies, and open jaws with what appear to be original ivory or bone teeth—a detail rarely seen in later examples. The eyes are inset and add to the lifelike, dramatic effect. While the surface shows evidence of a later polish, the carvings themselves bear strong signs of age, including minor cracks, handling wear, and a rich patina developed over many decades. One lion shows an old, stable repair to the rear leg (visible in photos), but both remain solid and display beautifully. Each approx. 23 cm long x 8 cm wide x 13 cm high Condition: Good antique condition; stable crack to one leg, surface polish likely added later. Age-consistent wear and patina throughout. All items offered by Treasure Trove Worcester Ltd are carefully selected for their authenticity, decorative appeal, and period character.
