Artist Biography – Horace Augustus Mummery (1867–1951)
Horace A. Mummery (1867–1951) was a British painter of landscapes, working largely in watercolour. His style was influenced by J.M.W. Turner and the French Impressionists, combining atmospheric washes with careful natural detail.
Mummery was born at Iver, Buckinghamshire, the son of a schoolmaster and Unitarian Minister. He studied at Hornsey Art School, where he formed a close friendship with the artist Robert G.D. Alexander. Through mutual acquaintances, he came into contact with the acclaimed watercolourist Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, whose style influenced his own approach.
He lived for many years in Wood Green, later settling in Cheam with his sister Una Constance Tilney and her husband, the artist Frederick Colin Tilney. Tilney and Mummery were close companions, frequently sketching the countryside around Midhurst, Sussex.
Mummery came from an artistic family — his brother John Charles S. Mummery was an architect and later President of the Royal Photographic Society.
As an exhibiting artist, Mummery showed works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He travelled abroad to France and Belgium, returning with brightly coloured sketches executed in the manner of Brabazon, though with more precise detail.
Today, examples of his work can be found in collections including the Bruce Castle Museum, Haringey, London. Although relatively few of his works have appeared in London salerooms since his death, Mummery remains a talented but somewhat overlooked watercolourist, whose rural and continental views continue to appeal to collectors of early 20th-century British art.
