Description
Type of Artwork: Pair of Original Antique County Maps – Worcestershire Surface: Laid paper Artists/Engravers: W.H. Toms (1742) – “A Map of Worcestershire, North West from London,” engraved and published September 29th, 1742. John Cary (1787) – “Worcestershire,” hand-coloured copperplate engraving, published London, Sept. 1st, 1787. Description: A fine pair of original antique maps of Worcestershire, engraved in the 18th century. The earlier example, engraved by W.H. Toms in 1742, features detailed topography, towns, fairs, and parliamentary information. The second, engraved by John Cary in 1787, is delicately hand-coloured, showing towns, roads, rivers, and county boundaries with Cary’s typical precision. Both maps are genuine period impressions (not reproductions), on laid paper, with expected signs of age — light toning, folds, and faint handling marks. Together, they provide an excellent comparison of cartographic styles across the 18th century. Approximate Age of Artwork: 1742 and 1787 Condition Report: Both maps remain in very good condition for their age, with strong impressions and visible plate marks. Some light toning and fold lines as shown, but no major tears or repairs. Please study the photographs provided. Size (approx): Toms map: 18 × 15 cm (sheet) Cary map: 31 x 24 cm (sheet) *************** *Our prices include fully insured UK delivery.
