Description
A late Victorian monochrome etching entitled “Carting Seaweed off the Coast of Guernsey” after a painting by English watercolourist Edward Duncan (1803-1882) and engraved by Scottish printmaker Charles Oliver Murray (1842-1923). The image captures a complex scene of gathering and loading seaweed onto carts drawn by oxen and horses on a rocky coastline. The busy scene is full of men, women and children engaged on the task, with the animals including a dog and various tools, against a distant choppy sea. Edward Duncan was a renowned watercolourist, member of the Royal Society of Watercolourists and patronised by Queen Victoria. The engraving has been recently reframed. There is a little foxing in the title margin, which does not detract, and no damage. The engraving is an interesting historical image of life in the late 19thC. Image dimensions 18cmHx29cmW.
