Description

For sale is this primitive and unusual portrait of a gentleman (possibly a naval officer) from the first quarter of the 19th century. The painting is a watercolour on paper which bears an embossed backstamp which reads: "Extra Superfine London Boards". The gentleman is wearing a powdered wig of the kind which went out of style by about 1830. The image measures about 10 x 8 inches. The gilt gesso frame measures about 13 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches. The condition of the painting is fair with acid burn to the paper where it was backed with wood. Loss of gilding and gesso to the original frame. I will be shipping with the painting with its original rolled glass.
