Description
A historically important Staffordshire transferware plate commemorating a key engagement of the Crimean War: the Battle of the Tchernaya River (16 August 1855). Produced circa 1855–56, the plate is creamware with a black printed battle scene, titled, and enhanced with hand-applied enamel in red, green, and yellow — a technique typical of mid-Victorian clobbered wares. This item was manufactured during the war itself and reflects the patriotic response of the British public to a conflict widely covered by the press. Such ceramics served not only as souvenirs but also as domestic memorials to national sacrifice. The Battle of Tchernaya marked a key Allied success in the conflict. Many fallen officers came from prominent aristocratic families, giving this object lasting emotional resonance. Unmarked, as is common for Staffordshire war-themed pottery. Highly suitable for collectors of Crimean War memorabilia, British military ceramics, and Staffordshire transferware. Condition: The plate has a visible hairline crack. It retains a strong transfer print and vibrant enamel decoration. Crazing to the glaze is consistent with age. Dimensions: Diameter: 15.2 cm Height: 2.3 cm Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.
