Type of artwork: Pair of Original Antiquarian Heraldic Watercolours – York, 1906 & 1910 Artist and Signature: One signed/dated H. M. Loadman, 1906 & One initialled/dated J. B., 1910 About H. M. Loadman Henry M. Loadman was part of a York family of antiquarian dealers active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Loadmans kept shops at 5 College Street, 37 Stonegate, and Minster Gates, York, trading in antiques, curios and historic prints. Alongside his dealing, H. M. Loadman documented York’s heraldry, stained glass and buildings in sketchbooks and watercolours. Several albums and records from the family are preserved today in the Explore York Archives, confirming their role in recording and preserving the city’s heritage. Subject: A fascinating pair of original early 20th century antiquarian heraldic studies, both relating to York. One depicts the Goldsmiths’ Arms, St Michael-le-Belfrey Church, York (South Aisle) — annotated and linked to Martin Boya, Goldsmith and Sheriff of York, 1545. The second, boldly coloured, features a heraldic banner with urns and leopard’s heads, initialled J.B. and dated 1910. Approximate age of artwork: Dated 1906 & 1910 Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Unframed Condition Report: Both works show expected age toning, light folds, and small marks consistent with over 110 years of age. Overall good condition for the period, with strong colour retention. Please see the photographs provided to judge the detail and condition.
