Inscribed: “Whitby… sketched Sept 1837, by Capt Ditmas, Madras Artillery”
Subject: A rare early 19th-century watercolour of Whitby pier, with column, breakwater, and sailboat in the foreground, the cliffs and Lythe Church faint in the distance. Sketched on site by Thomas Ditmas senior while serving as Captain in the Madras Artillery, during a return to England.
Approximate age of artwork: dated 1837
Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted on card, unframed.
Condition Report: The watercolour shows expected age toning with some handling marks, but retains excellent colour and detail. Please examine photographs closely for condition.
