Description
A very pretty pair of Georgian Irish silver fiddle and thread pattern serving spoons, the bowls later (Victorian) embossed and gilt washed into "berry" spoons. The handles have been finely machine engraved with a reeded background and stylised acanthus leaves and scrolls, finishing with a framed cartouche at the terminals of a family crest; a rather charming wolf passant holding a spear in its front right paw. The hallmarks are partially obscured due to being on the stem and partially rubbed, but they are legible for Dublin 1773 and the maker's initials appear to end with an F, possibly the silversmith unidentified but with the initials W.F, a flatware worker of the early 1770s. The measure 21.2cm (8 3/8") long and 4.5cm (1 3/4") wide. They weigh 169g / 5.4ozt. In excellent condition with damage, dents or repairs and minimal wear to the 19th century decoration. The hallmarks, as mentioned, are partially rubbed. A lovely set of serving spoons, perfect for desserts and fruit.
