Description

Type of Artwork: Original Graphite Portrait Drawing – Giuseppe Baini (1775–1844)
Artist and Attribution: Inscribed “Giuseppe Baini, 1842, Rome”. Closely related to a documented portrait by Rudolf Lehmann (1819–1905), dated 13 April 1842, Rome. This sheet may represent a companion drawing from the same sitting.
Subject: Giuseppe Baini (1775–1844), Roman priest, musicologist, conductor and biographer of Palestrina. He was a prominent figure in early 19th-century Roman music circles.
Medium: Pencil on laid paper
Approximate Date: Dated1842
Condition Report: This rare drawing remains in sound condition for its age. The sheet shows toning and minor handling marks, with small edge wear consistent with age (183 years old). The pencil work is clear and well-preserved, with the inscription “Giuseppe Baini, 1842, Rome” legible at the lower edge. Please study all photos carefully as they form part of the condition description.
Provenance & Context: The drawing bears the inscription “Giuseppe Baini, 1842, Rome”.
A closely comparable portrait of Baini by Rudolf Lehmann (1819–1905), also inscribed “Rome 1842”, is recorded in public archives and museum databases. That drawing shows Baini seated with the same cap and hand-warmer (“marito”), confirming both works were made at the same time and place.
Rudolf Lehmann was resident in Rome from 1839–1846, working alongside artists, musicians and intellectuals. The similarities of pose, inscription, and date strongly suggest this is a companion study from Lehmann’s Roman circle.
Significance:
This is not only a fine 19th-century portrait drawing, but a potentially important study directly linked to Lehmann’s documented 1842 portrait of Baini, created just two years before Baini’s death. Such material rarely appears on the market and will be of interest to collectors of music history, portraiture, or 19th-century Rome.
Size (approx): 21 x 29 cm
