Type of Artwork: Original Watercolour Study – “Willows in Todd’s Field"
Surface: Paper
Artist and Signature: Inscribed lower left “Willows in Todd’s Field / HPD”
Attributed to Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937), a Yorkshire artist and antiquarian with known links to York and the Ditmas family of artists.
Subject & Style: A delicate plein-air sketch showing willows grouped in the open landscape. Executed with light washes of green and brown, combined with fine ink/brush outlines. A charming study capturing Ditmas’s observational style, possibly worked on-site as part of his landscape practice.
Approximate Age of Artwork: Late 19th century (c.1890s)
Framed or Mounted: Currently presented on a modern mount card and protective sleeve (as shown in photographs). Ready to frame.
Condition Report: The watercolour shows some age-related foxing, surface marks, and light toning to the paper, consistent with its age. The study remains clear and attractive, with good colour retention. Please see photographs for full details of condition.
