Artist and signature: Signed by Mary Stevens (Exh. 1886–1924)
Mary Stevens (Exh. 1886–1924) was a British painter of flowers and birds who exhibited extensively in London and the provinces. She showed 64 works at the Leicester Gallery, 48 at the Dudley and New Dudley Gallery, 11 at the Society of Women Artists, 5 at the Royal Academy, London, and 11 at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, amongst others. She was the wife of artist Albert Stevens.
Approximate age of artwork: Circa late 19th to Early 20th Century
Depiction or Location: A richly detailed floral study depicting a garden border alive with sunflowers, delphiniums, petunias, and climbing blooms around a central archway. The composition leads the eye through to a distant ornamental garden, rendered with light and atmosphere.
