Description

“Scarce early hand-coloured lithograph by John Horner, c.1820, New Road Halifax – a rare, separately issued view not included in his later folio Buildings in Halifax.”
Artist Biography
John Horner (active c.1815–1840) was a Halifax-based draughtsman and topographical artist. He is best remembered for publishing Buildings in the Town and Parish of Halifax (1835–6), a series of lithographic views documenting local architecture during the industrial expansion of West Yorkshire. Horner’s works are an important visual record of the town’s transformation, though his prints are scarce outside institutional collections. Early or separately issued lithographs, such as this view of New Road, Halifax, are rarely encountered and of particular interest to collectors of Yorkshire history.
