Description

Type of artwork: Original Antique Watercolour
Artist and Signature: Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937) of York
Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937) was a solicitor and auxiliary officer who commanded the Durham Artillery from 1895, later serving with distinction in the Boer War and World War I. He was granted the honorary rank of Colonel in 1901. A member of a long-established York military family, Ditmas was also a skilled watercolourist. Often signing his works “H.P.D.”, he produced a series of topographical views from the 1870s to the early 20th century, recording Clifton, York, Shoeburyness, and other places connected with his life and service. Today his paintings are valued both as decorative works and as important historical records of vanished or altered locations.
Subject: A characterful red-brick cottage with tiled roof, once standing in Hudson’s Yard, Clifton, York. Ditmas notes on the reverse that the building “was pulled down – then inhabited”, underlining its place in York’s social history.
Approximate age of artwork: Circa late 19th Century
Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted on backing (unframed).
Condition Report: In fair condition overall, with expected wear, paper ageing and handling marks consistent with the artist’s own note of “bad paper.” Colours remain clear and strong.
Size of painting 19 x 27 cm
