Description
Type of artwork: Antique Pair of Engravings – “Le Repos en Égypte” & “La Vierge aux Cerises” Surface: Laid paper, mounted under ivory mountboard Artists and Engravers: After S. Le Roy (draughtsman) Engraved by Ribault and Ligeot Subjects: Le Repos en Égypte (after Guido Reni) — depicting the Holy Family resting on the flight into Egypt. La Vierge aux Cerises (after Gerard Douven) — showing the Virgin and Child with cherries, a symbol of divine love. These finely detailed 18th-century French engravings are exemplary of the École Flamande style, showcasing exceptional linework and tonal control typical of mid-1700s devotional printmaking. Both works are printed on period paper and remain crisp and clean, presented together in a new conservation mount. Approximate age of artwork: Mid to late 18th Century Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted (as shown) — ready for framing Art Historical Context: These prints were produced as part of the Cabinet des Estampes movement in France, where engravers such as Ribault and Ligeot interpreted masterworks by renowned painters including Guido Reni and Gerard Douven. Their refined cross-hatching technique and tonal gradation sought to reproduce the painterly depth of the originals, often for collectors and academic study. Both compositions derive from religious paintings depicting the Madonna and Child — central themes in 17th- and 18th-century devotional art — with notable influence from the Italian Baroque. Condition Report: Both engravings are in good condition with only faint, age-appropriate toning. No tears, stains, or losses visible. Presented under a fresh acid-free ivory mount.
