Description

This is an Asprey & Company late Georgian/William IV cut glass preserve or sugar bowl, cover and dish dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830. It was purchased by the previous owner from Asprey and Company in 1985 at a cost of £290. The receipt from Aspreys will be included in the deliverable.

The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.

The bowl has a cup-shaped bowl and measures 11 cm (4.4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The bowl is pillar-cut above a basal band of diamond cutting, with prism cutting above and below the diamonds. The pillars are alternately plain and cut with strawberry diamonds. The capstan stem is vertically facet cut. The conical foot is radially cut with alternating plain and strawberry cut ribs. to the rim, under which sits a band of diamond cutting. The bowl then steps inward and flares back out again where two prism cuts sit above a wide band of diamond cutting above another prism cut and a basal band of panel cuts. The bowl sits on a capstan stem with a medial annular knop and a slightly conical foot which is radially cut underneath to the edge. There is a polished out pontil mark to the underside of the foot. The bowl is 12 cm (4.8 inches) in height without the cover and 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height with the cover on.

The cover is cut in the same form as the bowl and we believe it to be the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bowl and is a good fit. It is cut with the same pillar, strawberry diamond and prism cutting and has a radially-cut mushroom finial. The cover has a small aperture where a (silver) spoon would sit. There is some light fritting to the glass around the aperture where the spoon has occasionally clashed with the edge.
The accompanying dish is described as a stand by Aspreys but would be unsuitable to that task as the bowl and cover would sit too precariously on it to be functional. Rather we believe it to be a side dish, perhaps for sweet biscuits to accompany the preserve. It is cut underneath with the same pillar cutting decorated in the same manner and with a radially cut base.
There are no significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. An impressive piece of cut glass in almost pristine condition with impeccable provenance.

Anglo Irish lead glass weighing in at 1.75 kg. (~ 3 lb 14 oz).
