Description
Artist Charles Henri Toussaint (French, 1849–1911) Title Titled: St. John’s College, Oxford: Gateway Leading to the Quadrangle Medium Antique etching on laid paper Date Circa 1879 Signature Signed in the plate lower left: “H. Toussaint” Description A fine 19th-century architectural etching by the French artist Charles Henri Toussaint, depicting a grand arched gateway opening onto a formal courtyard. The composition is rich in atmosphere, with strong perspective, carefully rendered architectural detail, and figures in period dress that lend scale and life to the scene. The work is traditionally titled “St. John’s College, Oxford: Gateway Leading to the Quadrangle”, a title which appears in historic and later catalogue references for this plate. Toussaint was well known for his architectural subjects, particularly views of historic European buildings rendered with precision and tonal depth. Printed on laid paper with a clearly visible plate mark, this is a genuine period impression dating from the late 19th century. An elegant and decorative work, well suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Condition Report The etching is in good antique condition, with light, even age-related toning consistent with its age. No tears or losses observed. Plate mark remains clear. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Approximate Size 34 x 26 cm (plate indentation 21 x 16 cm) Provenance / Notes This example corresponds to known market listings of the same plate by Toussaint, attributed to the late 19th century. *************** *Our prices include fully insured UK delivery.
