Description
Description An antique French copperplate engraving depicting St Martin dividing his cloak, after a composition by Anthony van Dyck. The print forms part of a numbered historical series (No. 212) and carries period inscriptions including “A. Van Dyck” to the upper margin and “St. Martin” below the image. Additional French text within the plate indicates the work was engraved after a royal collection example and executed by a professional engraver and printer of the period. The scene shows St Martin mounted on horseback, cutting his cloak to share with a beggar — a classic religious subject rendered with strong anatomical detail, balanced composition, and fine line work typical of late 18th to early 19th century French reproductive engravings. Printed on laid paper, this is a genuine antique impression intended for scholarly or decorative use rather than a modern reproduction. Condition Report The engraving is in honest antique condition, with age-related toning, light foxing, and some irregularity to the outer sheet edges. The plate image remains clear and well-defined. No tears or losses observed. Please review photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
