Description

Type of artwork: Two Original Hand Coloured Engravings
Subject: Two original hand-coloured aquatint engravings from Ideas, Accidental and Incidental to Hunting and Other Sports, published by Thomas McLean, London, circa 1826–1830. These humorous sporting scenes depict fox-hunting mishaps and form part of Alken’s celebrated early 19th-century series. Both engravings are printed on original laid paper and finished with period hand colouring. When viewed against the light, the laid paper structure and ink strike-through are clearly visible, confirming genuine early 19th-century impressions rather than later reproductions.
Artist / Engraver: After Henry Thomas Alken (British, 1785–1851)
Date: c 1828
Surface: Laid Paper
Condition Report: Both works are presented in matching mounts and frames and display gentle age toning and light spotting consistent with age. No evidence of later re-lining or restoration observed. Overall good, honest condition for their period. Please see photographs for full details.
Approximate size 29 x 26 cm (mount aperture approx. 19 x 16 cm)
