Description
Type of artwork: Original Antique Watercolour Painting Artist and Signature: Attributed verso to and very much in the style of Henry William Burgess (1792–1864) Provenance: * Purchased in an interesting collection of works including other works including works by Lady Julia Isabella Lavinia Gordon (née Bennet) 1772 - 1867 Subject: An important early 19th-century topographical watercolour depicting the Burial Ground at Waterloo, produced in 1826, eleven years after the Battle of Waterloo. The composition shows a fenced burial enclosure with gateway, with surrounding continental architecture visible beyond — a quiet, reflective record of a site of profound historical significance. Executed in pencil with restrained watercolour washes on blue-tinted paper, the work is characteristic of Henry William Burgess, a British artist known for his carefully observed architectural and historical views. The drawing is inscribed and dated 1826, and the reverse bears a faint pencil inscription of the artist’s name, supporting the attribution. Approximate age of artwork: Dated 1826 Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted as shown (unframed). Condition Report: Good antique condition overall, with age-related toning and light surface wear consistent with early 19th-century works on tinted paper. Please refer to the photographs for detail.
