Artist Biography :
Painter and jewellery designer who was born near Rowley Regis, West Midlands and was mainly self-taught as a painter although he did attended Birmingham School of Art as a part-time evening student during the early 1930's. Hipkiss trained as a jewellery designer and showed his designs in America and France. During World War II he saw service with the RAF in India and his work appeared regularly in "Victory" the Forces newspaper, to which he contributed illustrations and cartoons. During his time there he also held several successful exhibitions in Karachi. As a painter, he exhibited before WWII, at the Dudley Art Club, and also showed at the Pastel Society, at the RBSA and at the New English Art Club who elected him a member in 1979. Examples of his work are in the collection Dudley Art Gallery.
