Description

An antique Tibetan Buddhist travelling shrine or prayer box (‘Ghau’), which encases a painted terracotta Buddha figure wrapped in a hand embroidered quilted silk brocade. This portable shrine was used for prayer during travels or pilgrimages and to hold sacred objects that offered protective powers. The box is made of copper with the front panel of ‘Tibetan silver’ (an alloy of copper and silver) embossed with the eight sacred Buddhist motifs (‘Astammangala’) together with a protective guardian.
Condition: In good antique condition with no damage or repair.
Maker: Unmarked, Tibetan c early 20th century.
Dimensions: 90 x 75 x 32mm. 110g
