Description
Provenance: By family descent from the Chichesters of Arlington Court, Devon; from the collection of Andrew Chichester Everitt. Type of artwork: Antique Early Victorian Portrait Miniature – Charlotte Munden Medium: Watercolour and bodycolour on paper Subject: A charming three-quarter length portrait of a young girl identified as Charlotte Munden, depicted wearing a dark black dress with a white neckline. The sitter is shown with centre-parted hair and distinctive curled ringlets typical of early Victorian portraiture. The portrait has a soft, delicate quality with careful attention given to the facial features and expression, while the lower portion of the figure remains loosely rendered in the traditional style of small 19th century family portraits. Inscription verso: Handwritten note on the reverse reads: “Charlotte Munden wife of John Barnard grandmother of Frank Chichester.” This inscription appears to have been added by a later family member to record the sitter’s identity and lineage. Approximate age of artwork: Circa 1835–1855 (Early to Mid Victorian period) Frame: Housed in an attractive period ebonised wood frame with gilt inner slip and decorative brass hanger. The frame complements the portrait well and is believed to date from the same period. Condition Report: The portrait remains in good antique condition for its age with light surface wear and minor marks consistent with age. The paper shows natural toning typical of early Victorian works on paper. The frame has some small marks and wear commensurate with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
