Description

Pair of Aesthetic movement Brass and Jasperware candlesticks. The brass base has a diamond registration mark to the underside and blue and white Jasperware piece to the base of the stem. Sunflowers support each sconce. English c 1880. Both are in very good condition and are a delightful pair that are both useful and charming.
History
The Aesthetic Movement (c. 1860–1900) was a late 19th-century British art, design, and literary movement emphasizing "art for art's sake"—that beauty is the primary purpose of art, rather than moral or social themes. It championed exquisite craftsmanship, Japanese art influences, and stylized nature in furniture, fashion, and interiors.
