Description
Antique Crystal Jar & Cover with Silver Mount c.1800 An elegant early cut-glass jar and cover, mounted in sterling silver and bearing Birmingham hallmarks with maker’s mark “MB”. The glass is of notably good clarity and weight, finely cut with a band of geometric diamond patterning above spiral fluting, raised on a shaped pedestal foot. The form is well balanced and pleasing, with a sense of refinement in both proportion and execution. The original cover is stepped and finished with a faceted knop, matching well to the body. The rim is fitted with a sterling silver mount, clearly hallmarked and attributed to the Birmingham silversmith Matthew Boulton, with date letter for 1800. Measures 8 x 7 x 16 (height) cm The crystal without any significant damage. Old 'nibbles' to the foot and underside of lid. The silver rim attached well with very clear hallmarks, some little distortion in shape only. Lid sits well.
