Description
This very rare piece of collectable scouting memorabilia was made in Birmingham England in 1911. Made from silver with traces of turquoise enamel this pin badge is extremely rare. Please note there is no scout emblem -fleur de lys- in the centre of the Fylfot or swastika, apparently this was due to registration office difficulties and so it was used in this form for only a couple of years (1908-1911) until the fleur de lys could be added. But the outside decoration shows what appears to be ropes tied with four knots. First used in 1908 this small badge was known as a ‘Thanks Badge’ and it continued to be worn until circa 1935. Obviously at the time the swastika was not in the least controversial. In fact this symbol was a popular Victorian motif for good luck and well-being in Western countries during the Edwardian period. Possibly, Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the scouting movement, chose it for this reason. Silver hallmarks on the reverse of the badge, although they are very small and difficult to read, are for, we believe, Silver, Birmingham with the date letter M for 1911. The makers mark is J.W. The condition is good with slight traces of enamel still on the swastika, slightly misshapen and the pin is still straight and functions. Size 23mm x 23mm not including the pin.
